The wine culture in Cyprus dates back to 3000 BC while studies have shown that the local varieties are included between the oldest in the world.

In addition to the four major wineries, today there are more than 50 local wineries that produce smaller quantities of quality wines. As a result, the trends in cultivation of foreign grape varieties such Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Carignan Noir, Chardonnay and Semillon are also successfully introduced in Cyprus and are used along with the local varieties such as Black, Xynisteri and Maratheftiko.

However, the flagship Cypriot wine is Commandaria, the sweet wine which has the oldest tradition in the world in terms of production and appellation of origin.
